How to make wood pellet at home? An industry interpretation from principle to practical operation

As a professional who has long been deeply involved in the biomass energy industry, I often receive private messages from readers in the background, asking whether ordinary users or small-scale farmers can “produce” wood pellet by themselves.

In fact, the production logic of Wood Pellet is not complicated, but it does require some practical experience to produce high-quality, high-calorific “qualified products”. Today, I’ll combine industry knowledge and avoid those empty theories. Let’s talk in plain language about how to turn discarded wood into valuable “green gold” at home or in a small workshop.

What exactly are wood pellet?

In simple terms, wood pellet is a highly compressed biomass fuel.

If you directly burn the scattered sawdust, you will find that the flame is weak, there is a lot of smoke and it burns fast. However, after physical compression, when these sawdust are pressed into cylindrical small particles with diameters usually ranging from 6mm to 10mm, its energy density undergoes a qualitative change.

This kind of particle has an extremely low water content, a very high density and is very stable when burning. The reason why it can take shape is not due to chemical glue, but the Lignin contained in the wood itself. Under high temperature and high pressure, lignin softens and turns into a natural “adhesive”, and when cooled, it locks the fibers together like steel.

What are these small particles used for? (Not just for heating)

In the international market, the demand for wood pellets has remained stable, mainly because they are so versatile:

Home heating (primary use)

In combination with a dedicated fireplace (Pellet Stove), it not only heats up quickly but also has a high degree of automation, and can burn for several days with one addition of material.

Industrial boilers and power generation

Many factories use it to replace coal because its carbon emissions are almost zero, making it a magic tool for responding to environmental protection policies.

Animal bedding

This type of particle has extremely strong water absorption and a wood-like fragrance, making it very suitable for use as a bedding layer for stables, cat litter or laboratory pets.

BBQ

For instance, the pellets made of apple wood and cherry wood are the best substitutes for high-end fruit charcoal, and the meat smoked from them has a natural fruity aroma.

Practical Guide: How to Make Wood Pellet at Home?

If you want to make it at home, you can’t rely solely on your hands. You need at least one small Flat Die Pellet Mill. The following is the specific process flow and a few of my personal suggestions:

Step 1: Raw material preparation and initial screening

You can use straw, rice husks, sawdust, or even old pallets and wooden frames.

Pit-avoiding guide: If you are using logs or large branches, you must first use a shredder to crush them into small pieces of 3mm to 5mm or less. If it’s too big, the machine will get stuck. If it’s too small (like flour), the shaping effect will be poor instead.

Step Two: Moisture Control (The core of success or failure

This is where homemade granules are most likely to fail.

The ideal moisture content of gold is between 12% and 15%.

Rule of thumb: Grab a handful of sawdust and hold it tightly. If it can form a ball and not fall apart when you let go, but it doesn’t drip water, then it’s almost done. It’s too dry and the particles will fall apart. It’s too wet. Not only can it not be pressed out, but it will also produce a large amount of steam and even cause the mold to explode.

Step 3: Pressing into shape

Pour the processed materials into the granulator.

Professional experience: When the machine is just started, the mold is cold and the material discharge may not be smooth. You can first mix in some oily wood chips (add a little used engine oil or cooking oil and stir well) to warm up the mold. Wait until the machine gets hot before adding the normal materials. You will see golden particles constantly being spat out.

Step 4: Cooling and hardening (Don’t rush to bag)

The temperature of the particles just out of the machine can reach over 80℃, and at this time, they are soft.

Key points of operation: Do not bag immediately. Otherwise, the moisture cannot escape and the particles will get damp again and disperse. You need to spread it out flat and let it air dry naturally, or blow it at you with a fan. When it has completely cooled and hardened, you can even hear the crisp sound of the particles hitting the bucket wall.

Step 5: Sieving and packaging

Finally, filter out the surface powder through a sieve. Don’t throw away these powders. Add them in and re-press them when feeding materials next time.

The last point: “Industry Truth”

Many people ask me, “Can I buy a feed pellet machine to press wood chips?” I must tell you responsibly: Hang. Although the principles are similar, the hardness of wood chips is much greater than that of corn and soybean meal. The mold strength and pressure of the feed machine are often insufficient, resulting in loose pellets and extremely rapid machine wear and tear. If you are truly interested in biomass fuel, you must choose a dedicated biomass compression mold.

Making your own wood pellet not only saves money but also represents a form of reusing waste resources. If you have any questions about the selection of small pellet machines or the proportion of raw materials, please leave a message below. I will give you more detailed suggestions based on the specific type of wood.
